Orchid Midi Dress by Chalk & Notch Patterns

My first experience pattern testing was for the Orchid Midi Dress by Chalk and Notch Patterns. I had no idea what to expect from the testing process, but it really made me work on this dress with much more intention. Gabriella of Chalk & Notch did an outstanding job of organizing the testers and the process in a really thoughtful way. The testers convened in a private Facebook group, where we were encouraged to introduce ourselves and share along the whole process. We were also expected to make suggestions on the verbiage, instructions, diagrams, sewing process, and fitting of our Orchid Midi. This was a wonderful learning experience, and I encourage sewists of any level to apply to test a new pattern at some point in their sewing journey.

The details

  • Pattern is the Orchid Midi by Chalk and Notch Patterns, view B.
  • I made a straight size 6 bodice, grading from a 6 in the waist to size 12 in the hips
  • My measurements are 36/29/44inches; 91/73/112cm bust/waist/hip and I’m 5’7″/170cm tall
  • In this tester version, the skirt was longer than midi-length so I shortened it by 1.5″; consequently, Gabriella (pattern designer), changed the final version of the skirt length perfectly.
  • This pattern also features a flutter short sleeve view
  • Orchid Midi was released in a collaboration with the Parasol Jumpsuit by Ensemble Patterns so you can mix and match the top and bottom pieces to form a variety of different looks.
  • I used a rayon challis that felt like butter and sewed up like a dream. It’s from SR Harris, my local fabric outlet.
Orchid Midi waist detail

The Orchid Midi features a gathered yoke on the front and the back of the wrap bodice, and a drawstring casing that cleverly uses a few inches of elastic at the back of the tie for a super comfy feel around the waist. As a result, there is no need to loosen or readjust the tie for when you sit or need a little more room for your belly.

Breezy day for photos!

Overall, I found the Orchid Midi pattern to be certainly as enjoyable to sew as it is to wear. You can check out other versions of this dress at #orchidmidi. Finally, check out Chalk & Notch’s round up of tester inspiration on her site as well!

    1. I think you’re right about sewmystyle this year – perfect! The flutter (flounce?) short sleeve view for this pattern is really gorgeous too!

    1. Thanks Kara! Someone else said the same thing over on Instagram – they have the pattern but haven’t made it yet. Can’t wait to see yours and other versions popping up this spring!
